This semester establishes a basis for creative writing via exercising creative voice, narrative structures and writing a short story. Students will develop their skills across three units lasting one month each. Modules can begin at any time starting in September 2024 and may be taken in succession or spaced out over the semester or school year.

Unit 1: Voice Basics

  • Week 1: Descriptive Details
  • Week 2: Inner Ideas
  • Week 3: Playing with Time & Figurative Language
  • Week 4: Integrating Dialogue

Unit 2: Playing with Narrators:

  • Week 1: Introduction to Points of View
  • Week 2: Defining the Narrator
  • Week 3: Types of Narrator
  • Week 4: Creative Narration Techniques

Unit 3: Short Story Incubation Lab

  • Week 1: Brainstorming and Outlining
  • Week 2: Writing a Rough Draft
  • Week 3: Revising Your Writing
  • Week 4: Final Project
