Revise to Publish: Short Memoir Workshop

Bring two drafted memoirs or personal essays. Spend four weeks revising them to publication quality with coach feedback on both. No new writing; this is a revision workshop.

Your memories. Ready for publication.

This class is for students who have two drafted memoirs or personal essays and want to revise them to publication quality. This is not a “let’s write it” class; students must bring completed drafts. If you need to write a memoir first, take Personal Story: Short Memoirs from Start to Finish before this one.

Over four weeks, students evaluate both pieces, develop a revision strategy for each with their coach, and work through deep revision including structural strengthening, voice consistency, factual clarity, and line-level polish. Memoir revision has its own challenges: balancing honesty with craft, ensuring the narrative serves the story rather than just recounting events, and finding the right distance between the writer and the experience. Your coach guides the student through all of it.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: Revision Strategy & Self-Evaluation (Piece #1) | Week 2: Revision Strategy & Self-Evaluation (Piece #2) | Week 3: Deep Revision & Coach Conference (Piece #1) | Week 4: Deep Revision & Final Polish (Piece #2)

Don’t have two pieces yet? Take Personal Story: Short Memoirs from Start to Finish to write your first draft, then come back to Revise to Publish to polish it.
