Research Writing I Workshop

Find, evaluate, and cite your sources. Learn to choose a topic, gather information, read research effectively, and create proper MLA citations. Grades 6–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

The first stage of any research paper is finding and organizing your sources and most students have never been taught how. This workshop guides students through choosing a topic, finding reliable sources, reading and evaluating information effectively, and creating proper MLA citations. By the end, students have a solid research foundation ready for the writing stage. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: Finding a Topic and Sources | Week 2: Gathering, Evaluating and Citing Sources | Week 3: Organizing Sources and Creating a Works Cited Page | Week 4: Quotations, Paraphrasing, and In-Text Citations

Intended For Grades: 6-12

Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Find appropriate sources
  • Prepare proper MLA works cited page and citations
  • Understand quoting and paraphrasing sources
  • Ask and understand research questions
  • Create a full outline for a research project
Class Features:
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.

Pre-Reqs: Intro to Research Writing or Equivalent

Class Pre-requisites: 
  • Introduction to Research Writing or previous writing class covering thesis statements and essay structure.
  • Recommended prerequisite: Creative Writing Voice Basics
