Real-World Persuasive Writing Workshop

Write to convince using real arguments for real audiences. Learn persuasive strategy and rhetorical techniques, then apply them by writing a persuasive letter on a real issue. Grades 9–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

This workshop teaches the principles of persuasive writing and puts them to work immediately. Students learn types of counterarguments, rhetorical strategies, and how to build a  convincing case. Then they apply everything by writing a persuasive essay and a letter addressing a personal, local, or national issue of their  choice. This isn’t hypothetical essay writing. Students produce a real piece of persuasion for a real audience. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.

Intended For Grades: 9-12

Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Identify the parts of persuasion
  • Recognize logical fallacies
  • Evaluate biases in news media
  • Analyze real-life persuasive situations
Class Features:
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
