Introduction to Journalism Workshop

Learn to report, interview and write like a journalist. Journalistic ethics, the freedom of the press, and the structure of news, features, and editorials are all covered. Grades 9–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

This workshop introduces the principles and style of journalistic writing a form that teaches clarity, precision, and accountability better than almost any other. Students explore journalistic ethics and the freedom of the press, learn the purpose and structure of various types of journalism (news, features, editorials), and practice writing in journalistic form. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: Introduction to Journalism and Journalistic Ethics | Week 2: Reporting and Writing Skills | Week 3: Exploring Journalism Genres | Week 4: Journalism in the Digital Age

Intended For Grades: 9-12

Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Understand the different types of journalism
  • Effectively execute an interview
  • Complete one full article ready for publication
  • Comprehend journalism ethics
Class Features:
  • Students will have the opportunity to submit their article to a writing contest as part of the class
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
