Essay Writing Workshop (High School)

Master the structure and style of high school-level essays. Learn to respond to fiction and nonfiction in essay form, build a thesis, and develop support from a text. Grades 9–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

This workshop introduces the core skills of high school essay writing, which is the kind of writing students will do in every academic course from here through college. Students learn how to respond to both fiction and nonfiction in essay form, form a clear thesis, and develop fully supported arguments drawn from a text. A strong foundation for any student moving into high school-level academic work. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: Brainstorming, Thesis Statements, and Introductions | Week 2: Outlining and Organizing Your Essay | Week 3: Writing Essays | Week 4: Fully Developed Essays & Timed Essays

Intended For Grades: 9-12

Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Identify and create strong thesis statements
  • Create outlines for essays
  • Respond to literature in essay form
  • Answer standardized prompts with well-crafted responses
Class Features:
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
