Creative Writing Workshop: Playing with Narrators

Explore point of view and what it does to a story. Write from the perspective of unreliable narrators, animal narrators, and more and discover how the narrator changes everything. Grades 6–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

Point of view isn’t just a technical choice. It’s the lens through which a reader experiences an entire story. This workshop helps students understand the role of the narrator and encourages them to experiment: writing pieces with unreliable narrators, animal narrators, first-person narrators, and other unconventional perspectives. Students discover firsthand how changing the narrator changes the story. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: An Introduction to Point of View | Week 2: The Narrator | Week 3: Types of Narrators | Week 4: Creative Narration Techniques

Intended For Grades: 6-12

Time Expectation:

Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.

Class Objectives:

Understand narrator point of view
Experiment with multiple narrators in one situation
Develop a narrator profile and backstory
Create stories and sketches from 1st and 2nd point of view
Develop and revise a short story

Class Features:

Students will have the opportunity to submit their work to a writing contest as part of the class
Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills. Coaches also available via email all week long.
An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
