Creative Writing Foundations Workshop

Find your voice: the foundation for all creative writing. Descriptive details, inner thoughts, dialogue, and more. Grades 6–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

Every writer has a voice, and this workshop helps students find theirs. Each week focuses on a different technique that brings writing to life: descriptive details, inner thoughts, dialogue, and more. By the end of four weeks, students have a toolkit of techniques they can use in any creative writing they do from here forward. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.

Week-by-Week: Week 1: Introduction & Descriptive Details | Week 2: Inner Ideas | Week 3: Playing with Time & Figurative Language | Week 4: Dialogue & Writing Prompts

Intended For Grades: 6-12

Time Expectation:

Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.

Class Objectives:

Understand and utilize descriptive details
Improve and blend inner ideas with description
Adapt time to tell a story
Create engaging dialogue
Develop and revise a short story

Class Features:

Students will have the opportunity to submit their work to a writing contest as part of the class
Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills. Coaches also available via email all week long.
An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
