Analyzing Persuasive Arguments Workshop

Spot bias, identify fallacies and think like a critical reader. Analyze real articles and nonfiction to recognize persuasive techniques and respond to them with confidence. Grades 10–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment.

This workshop teaches students to read critically in a world full of persuasion. Using news articles and other nonfiction, students learn to identify bias, analyze logical fallacies, understand the anatomy of a persuasive argument, and recognize how their own biases affect their reading. By the end of four weeks, students can break down any argument they encounter in school, in media, or in life and respond thoughtfully. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.

Intended For Grades: 10-12

Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Identify the parts of persuasion
  • Recognize logical fallacies
  • Evaluate biases in news media
  • Analyze real-life persuasive situations
Class Features:
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
