Practical Writing: Online Communication

This workshop will teach students about various aspects of practical writing online, including writing emails, attaching and converting documents, as well as internet safety in different settings. Starts the first Monday of every month. For grades 9-12.

Helping students understand our communication online is important to their life skills as well as their writing ability. Topics covered include: types of online communication and the privacy standards of each type, composing emails, technical skills such as attachments and converting documents, and social media safety. Students will learn how to select what they write online and how style differs depending on the audience. Students will NOT be encouraged to create any social media accounts–discussing these choices with parents is stressed. All practice for online communication occurs in our monitored, protected classroom, and parents can view all the information as well. Starts the first Monday of every month.

Time Expectation:

Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.

Class Objectives:

Compose well-written emails
Understand internet safety and social media pitfalls
Convert documents between formats
Adjust tone in communications for business and personal needs

Class Features:

Students will have the opportunity to communicate professionally online as part of the class
Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills. Coaches also available via email all week long.
An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.

All materials will be provided in the class.
