Learn how to recognize bias, analyze fallacies, and understand the parts of persuasion.  This class focuses on reading current articles and other forms of nonfiction to identify persuasive techniques and be able to respond to those strategies.  Personal biases and the effect of social media on our argumentation is also discussed.  Topics include:  elements of persuasive arguments, fallacies, recognizing bias, rhetorical strategies, and formulating arguments.All classes begin the first Monday of each month.

Syllabus Overview
Time Expectation:
  • Classes have weekly assignments. All assignments will be due midnight Friday EST each week. Assignments are intended to take approximately 2-3 hours per week.
Class Objectives:
  • Identify the parts of persuasion
  • Recognize logical fallacies
  • Evaluate biases in news media
  • Analyze real-life persuasive situations
Class Features:
  • Students will have weekly contact with a coach who evaluates mastery and skills.  Coaches also available via email all week long.
  • An online classroom will teach students time management and appropriate cyber behavior in a controlled environment.
All materials will be provided in the class.
