AI Literacy Workshop

Thinking critically about AI is a skill that students need as these tools become something everyone is using. Learn how AI actually works, how to verify what it tells you, and how to decide when using it is honest. Grades 6–12. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Student track, Side-by-side track with a parent, and Side-by-side with Mentor Sessions track with discussions with an instructor with direct professional experience in AI systems and ethics education.

AI tools are already in our world, but students lack critical thinking skills about how to use them ethically, and parents often feel lost in the discussion. This workshop teaches students what these AI tools actually do, why confident-sounding output is so often wrong, and how to verify a claim before trusting it. Students examine ethical questions honestly: whose words are these, what counts as your own work, when does help become substitution? This is a critical thinking class first and a technology class second. All family choices in AI use (free access, limited access, full ban) will be supported. Students will use AI in class for activities, but no paid accounts will be necessary.

Three tracks are available for this class:

  • Student Track: Full class with lessons and reflection activities each week. Instructor feedback on every assignment. Weekly deadlines. 2–3 hours per week. All materials provided.
  • Side-by-side Track: Full class access to one student and one parent account. Includes reflection activities & instructor feedback from the Student track, plus discussion questions and family activities for parent & child to do together during class and beyond.
  • Side-by-side with Mentor Sessions Track: Everything in the Side-by-side track, plus two 30-minute live zoom meetings with a professional experienced in the field of AI use and ethics.  Meetings will be scheduled after enrollment with each family directly. Mentored session covers one enrolled student. Additional student add-ons available at a discount.
